Dog Odor – Helping Your Dog Smell Better

Small dog rolling in the leaves and getting stinkyIf you are a dog owner and your home is near a river or on a farm, you know very well that dogs are attracted to smelly decayed objects. Whether the stinky object is a dead fish, manure, or wet decaying leaves, dogs love to roll around in it and come home all stinky. This causes endless enjoyment for dogs, but understandably it’s highly annoying for the owner. The dog odor means that they have to take time out from their busy schedule to wash the dog or take it to the pet groomer’s salon, not to mention that they just plain stink up the house. And even if they wash the dog, there can be no promise that the odor will permanently go away.

Some experts in the field of canines theorize that dogs roll around in such decaying items in order to “disguise” themselves by changing their scent. But noone knows why dogs have the instinct to cover up their own scenet. The reason could be that back in the days before dogs were domesticated, they had to hunt for their food, and in order to keep their prey unaware of their presence, they camoflaged their dog scent. An alternative reason could be for the dog’s own protection. Disguising their scent might have kept predators away, as well as other packs of territorial dogs. On the other hand dogs could simply enjoy such smells and like to carry it with them. The truth is that we don’t really know, and so far we haven’t been able to find a dog who could clearly explain to us the reason!

Dogs Health Symptoms

Of all methods for getting rid of dog odor, the fastest and simplest is to wash your dog. Using dog shampoo specifically designed for their spieces would be a good idea. Regular shampoo for people is a bad idea to use on your beloved little pooch, since it can remove healthy oils from the dog’s fur, so that the skin is left unprotected from infections, bites, and rashes.

One thing to consider if your dog consistently annoys you by rolling in stink is to take him to a profession pet salon and have his coat clipped short. The shorter coat will make it much easier to wash your dog after it gets itself stunk up, not to mention that a shorter coat is more comfortable for your dog in the summer time.

In the event that you have properly given your dog a bath yet you still smell a strong dog odor, then the animal’s coat may not be the source of the stench, but it could instead be a more serious health issue. Dogs with bad dental hygeine can’t let out some very foul smells that circulate through the room or even the entire house. It could also be an indication of something more serious, like kidney problems or diabetes. Another possibilty is that your dog has an infected anal sac, which has become highly smelly. If you have not been able to eliminate the smell after a good wash, be sure to consult with your veterinarian to help diagnose your dog’s health symptoms and help solve his stinky little problem.
